Ward 1 Alderperson: Diana Hetherington

Ward 1 Alderwoman Diana Hetherington has been a resident of Leland Grove since May, 1982.  She and her husband, Gary, were married at their Leland Grove home.  She was first elected as Alderwoman for Ward 1 in 2011.  She has continued to serve in that capacity except for a two-year term as the City Clerk.

Diana was raised in Springfield and attended local parochial schools.  She was one of the first students to attend Lincoln Land Community College.  She earned her Bachelor’s of Business in Accounting degree from Western Illinois University and a Masters Degree in Public Administration from the University of Illinois at Springfield.  She earned her CPA certification and was active in the Institute of Internal Auditors during her career.

She has held various management and auditing positions in federal and state government.  After retiring from the Department of Revenue, she expanded her community volunteer activities.  She has been a tax counselor for the IRS/AARP Tax Program since the 1980’s.  She has been active in historic preservation: Old State Capitol, Dana Thomas House and the Brinkerhoff Home Foundations.  She currently volunteers at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum.  She is an active member of the King’s Daughters Organization and the Springfield Civic Garden Club.  She has been a Master Gardener through the University of Illinois Extension since 2003.  After conducting a tree inventory with local master gardeners and volunteers from Trees Forever, she was instrumental in establishing a Tree Board for the City and Leland Grove’s designation as a Tree City USA.

Diana enjoys attending car shows with her husband, anything garden related, along with collecting art and antiques.  Her little red truck (license DLH) is a frequent sight around Leland Grove, hauling plants and treasure hunting at local garage sales and auctions.
